Feast of the Presentation of the Lord

This weekend (February 2nd), the church celebrates the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord which occurs forty (40) days after Christmas Day and it is often referred to as the Candlemas day since, as you may have noticed, there is a blessing and procession with candles.
According to the Roman Rite, this weekend marks the definite end to the Christmas season as it is practiced in the European region however, in modern times, since some has designated the Feast of the Epiphany or the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord as the end of the Christmas season.
If we listen to the readings of this weekend, we come to a realization that the Lord has sent someone before him to prepare a way for him. That person, whom the Lord has sent as we know is St. John the Baptist since John was born six months prior to the birth of Jesus.
Now, as the Law of Moses was declared, every first born-male must be consecrated to the Lord as such Mary and Joseph were fulfilling this Law. During Jesus' time in the temple, faithful servants of God such as Simeon who had been waiting for the Lord and was assured by God that he would not see death until he has seen the Lord Jesus Christ himself and Anna among others all went and blessed the Lord. It is on this feast (in the West), that the Law of purification for women who had given birth was declared in the Law of Moses.
As we will witness during our weekend masses, we shall engage ourselves in a procession with candles and this is to symbolize Jesus Christ as the 'light of the World'.

Feast of the Baptism of our Lord

This weekend, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord and the end of the Christmas season. Now it may seem that Christ, a sinless being, submitting himself to St. John the Baptist, and being baptized by water in the river Jordan, though he had no need of it. He did it as an example for the rest of in the years to follow. If we must enter into the family of God, we all must avail ourselves to the very first Sacrament and that is, the Sacrament of Baptism to cleanse ourselves from original sin. This Baptism (by water) is usually done at infant stages and it is the first step in the Sacraments of Initiation. The other steps include the Sacrament of First Communion and the Sacrament of Confirmation. It is on this occasion where we see the Trinity intervening, where Christ the Son, submerges himself into the waters of Life and God the Father, announces 'This is my Son, the Beloved, my favor rests on him' and finally, the Holy Spirit, in the form of a dove, rests upon Jesus after raising from the waters.
As we contemplate on our very own Baptism, let us be mindful that the grace of the Sacrament of Baptism is indelible. May the waters of life continue to cleanse us.

Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God

The Octave of Christmas end on the first fay of the new year, which is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, venerated as the Mother of God. The Gospel reminds us that she "kept all these things, pondering them in her heart" (Luke 2:19). So she did in Bethlehem, on Golgotha at the foot of the cross, and on the day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended in the Upper Room. And so she does today too. The Mother of God and of human beings keeps in her heart all of humanity's problems, great and difficult, and meditates upon them. The Alma Redemptoris Mater walks with us and guides us with motherly tenderness towards the future. Thus she helps humanity cross all the "thresholds" of the years, the centuries, the millenniums, by sustaining their hope in the One who is the Lord of history.

--Blessed Pope John Paul II
